It was the 1960s Johnny Horton’s “North to Alaska” had made the hit parade and John Wayne was thrilling theater goers in a movie of the same title when Shirley committed herself to a life of unusual circumstance near Fairbanks, Alaska as the wife of a frontierholic. Despite a preference for a comfortable suburban lifestyle, she found herself living in a 25-foot by 25-foot log enclosure, caring for an adopted son. Their antiquated way of life became more than simply inconvenient when she delivered three little girls by cesarean within a twelve month period. Although the situation was untenable, she carved out a life for herself within the confines of their log home. Over time, she rediscovered her independent spirit, eventually coming to terms with the love triangle that defined her, caught between a stubborn Pollack and the unyielding landscape they called home.

I heard this story before reading this book. I had a middle seat on a flight home to Florida when a well dressed friendly woman sat in the aisle seat beside me. She didn't say anything yet but I could feel joy from her. I was tired, cranky, hoping to sleep during the flight before arriving back home to my full time job, four preteen boys and workaholic husband. She started chatting with me. She could tell I was avoiding conversation and promised to to leave me be. Embarrassed by her very accurate assessment, I sat up and put on a smile. She was on her way to visit Cuba with some friends. Her excitement was contagious and I told her a little about me, how I also had four children and was holding onto a 20 year marriage. She shared her story with me of living in a log cabin that she built with her own hands with her husband and shared what it was like to live in Alaska. When I noticed it was 3o'clock, i interrupted our chat to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy as I had done daily in memory of my Father who died on my 40th birthday. We spoke about God and I shared a prayer with her and gave her Rosary beads and told her how miracles were happening in my life that I could only attribute to prayer. She told me about her book about her life and I told her I couldn't wait to read it. Shirley, I loved your book. I can relate in so many ways. Marriage is very hard and I'm still trying to make it happy with hopes of better times to come. I think it's the little joys of each day when pieced together that make up the big beautiful puzzle of life and I'm holding onto that hope.
I'd love to hear about your trip to Cuba. Look me up and please write more! I'm a fan for sure ❤️ Mary Jorgensen

Just finished an interesting and familiar story of life in the last frontier. Having lived through a similar situation I found it a compelling read.
Thanks for the walk down memory lane, I felt your angst and triumphs. Told from a woman's point of view, I could relate to your experiences.
Looking forward to your next adventure.
Great read. What an amazing story of a "frontier" family. I personally know Shirley and I really do admire her accomplishments in life. She is a good friend, a talented writer and my son was fortunate to marry one of her daughters and gain Shirley as his mother-in-law.
Very compelling read. An honest and vivid insight into the difficulties of marriage in the 1960s, compounded by the isolation and starkness of the Alaskan bush lifestyle. Informative and insightful !
Captivating Alaska adventure read, detailing a true journey from a Wisconsin farm girl to an Alaskan pioneer life. Shirley's engaging style of story telling not only brings the reader into the ruggedness of homesteading in a remote land but weaves life's complex relationships on many different levels. The ways in which Shirley expressed her intimate personal growth truly revealed her strength of character.
I admire Shirley's courage in sharing her Alaskan journey, personal growth and writing skill with all of us. Through Shirleys thoughtful and skillfully crafted words, she has taught me the true understanding of an Alaskan Pioneer Lady. Congratulations on a wonderfully written book.
Interesting book about life in Alaska
I really enjoyed your story about your life , I am not an avid reader but I could hardly put it down, I hope to read more of your stories.
