I didn't want to stop reading it. 1990s Susan Butler is in a fatal car crash. Her guardian angels give her a second chance to live by whisking her back into the body of Margaret Johnsbury who died falling from a horse. Margaret had been mean, vicious and hurt many people. All of a sudden Margaret's body has the soul of Susan, who is loving and good. Maggie refers to Margaret's body with Susan's soul.My heart went out to Maggie who had to find the strength and courage to face social ostracism and hatred. All people snubbed her and shunned her. Yet, she withstood it while she continued her quest to get her husband to see the real her and hopefully to love her. I was awed when Maggie would fight back the tears and try to smile while suffering the punishment that was so well deserved by her predecessor but not at all deserved by her. I loved her personality. It was fun seeing her make some jogging clothes to wear back then. She had no shoes, so she would jog barefoot in the sand.
Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: two. Setting: 1990s and 1888 Newport, Rhode Island. Genre: time travel historical romance.
To date, I've read one other book by Jane Goodger. My 2 star review of "Marry Christmas," Copyright 2008, was posted 10/10/08.

From the back cover
Can love be a lifetime away?
Waking up after an accident, the last thing Susan Butler remembered was living in the 1990s, happily married and joyously especting her first child. Now, suddenly, inexplicably, she is Margaret Johnsbury, the year is 1888, and she is about to find out she is detested not only by her handsome husband, Carter, but by the entire town of Newport.
Learning to live in 19th century Newport's rigid Victorian society is only the first of "Maggie's" challenges. Far more difficult is winning the trust of Carter, the sexy, volatile stranger who so grudgingly shares her home. But just when it seems Maggie will regain all the joy she possessed in her old life, a devastating secret surfaces to shatter her world to pieces. Now she must fight, not only for the heart of the man she has fallen desperately in love with, but for her very life.
And my review
This was a very good book. And for a first novel, it's outstanding. I love time-travel and paranormal romances, but not every author can do them well. Goodger did it in WHEN THERE IS HOPE.
The pain experienced by the heroine was very well portrayed, and very true to life. Imagine being on top of the world, with a loving husband and a baby on the way, only to have it all taken away. Then, not only are you thrown back into the past, but now you have a husband who can't stand the sight of you, a lover who thinks that you are just playing hard to get, and a houseful of servants who'd be more likely to poison you than to turn down your bed. That's the situtation the heroine finds herself in.
I liked the fact that the author didn't have them fall in instant love and also that the hero didn't forgive or trust wife again too easily, considering what the real Maggie had done to him in the past. I loved watching him fall in love with the new "amnesiac" Maggie in spite of himself. There was tension all throughout the novel, as the reader waited for Maggie's past to catch up with the couple, destroying their new-found love.
There was some annoying point-of-view switches marring this book, though that's a minor complaint. While I didn't find this to be a can't-put-it-down book, or a keeper, it was definitely worth the read, and I do recommend it. I also recommend Goodger's THE PERFECT WIFE, which was a keeper, as well as being a couldn't-put-it-down read.
I enjoyed the storyline very much. It was unique and different from the usual time travel romance novels. I encourage the reader that, if you find yourself scratching your head at the simplistic narrative of the first few chapters, to persevere. The writing vastly improves as the book progresses. This is definitely worth the read.
Bought it three times because I gave away the first two copies. Excellent read, characters clear & sharp and entire.
I actually liked the book a lot more then I thought that I would. It had it's funny moments, tons of angst and sweet moments as well.
Not to mention that the wife was the villian in this one! It has always been the husband that is classified as the lying cheat and evil partner...it's really refresing to see the roles turned around.
The only three things I found really funny and sort of disgusting were
* The book cover. It looks corny to me...I had to hide it from my boyfriend in running fear that he was going to laugh at my choice of smut books...lol.
* The wedding night. I laughed so hard when he found out that his wife was not the oh-so-sweet virgin that he anticipated. He was hurt by that fact even though he was as the book recalls "more than experienced with women". When she made fun of him for losing his load to fast...I about fell out of my chair! ..lol again..
* The sexing around. His "first" wife had lovers, but no love children out of wed lock. The husband had some tramp widow feeling him up and him sexing her up, but again no actual conception and child bering.... Then the fact that the husband had much experience with "many women before meeting margret"...and again no love babies?? I don't know about you all, but these where the most non-fertal, sterile and horny bunch of weirdos to be from the 1800's..that loved sexing each other up but thought it indcent to show a little leg when running on the beach...lol..funny.
As they say, asking a serious reader what their favorite book is is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. This book was riveting. I cried so hard in certain spots; but mostly, I had tears trickling down most of the book. This book is beyond compare, involving my favorite genre (romance) and sub-genre (time-travel) with the brimming emotion and subtlety that I cannot remember reading else where.
