This is a great gift for my 10-year-old niece. She has a sudden interest in spaceflight and astronauts. I was glad I'd recently discovered the Mercury 13, the group of women who trained alongside the Mercury astronauts, even though they'd never be considered as astronauts, because they were women. The program was funded privately by an early female aviator -- Jacqueline Cochrane -- and ran alongside the NASA program, with the goal of finding out if women could withstand the rigorous training as well as men could. And they did! This book is a highly readable and extensively illustrated account of that program.Tags : Almost Astronauts: 13 Women Who Dared to Dream (Jane Addams Honor Book (Awards)) [Tanya Lee Stone, Margaret A. Interesting.could have used more pictures but overall very informative
good
bought this for book report my 11 year old daughter had to do. She loved it..
excellent
My granddaughter has decided to become an astronaaut. I selected this book for her because I think it's important for her to read about those who went before her. She is someone who is comfortable with hersef and having a career goal at 10 years of age is admirable. This book will only add to her confidence and knowledge.
Great book about forgotten heroes! I read it and then gave it to my 83 year old mother in law. Even though she lived during that era she'd had no idea that women had been qualified for the space program by NASA.
My daughter chose to read this from her summer reading list for school. The book is well made and durable for a paperback. It is still in great shape despite her tendency to throw things on the floor or shove then in a book bag.
The story is inspiring and full of historical references. Good read for girls and women!
