I bought this in paperback form when it first came out in the 90's. Came across it off and on over the years and finally decided to purchase a copy for my kindle as the paperback was long gone. This is one of those books that you read over and over wishing the content would be different. I think what bothers me the most is the ending, after everything they go thru the ending just isn't satisfying even though it ends okay. Typical man meets younger woman and dumps the wife, then realizing he made a big mistake. There are parts in the book that are good, Celine the wife does handle what happens pretty good, she try's to make Max the hubby, out to be confused and not just a cheater. I really think the author wanted this to be a marriage of convenience story that just went wrong.Tags : Perfect Marriage (Silhouette Intimate Moments) [Laurey Bright] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers.,Laurey Bright,Perfect Marriage (Silhouette Intimate Moments),Silhouette,0373076215,FICTION Romance General,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,MASS MARKET,Non-Classifiable,Romance,Romance - General,RomanceRegency,Romance: Regency,Romance: historical

This book is not for everyone. I was reluctant to buy it for over a year because of the negative reviews here but I gave it a shot because I love stories about troubled marriages and second chances. The first half of the book is particularly excruciating to read because we experience Celine's anguish and heartbreak over losing her husband. For most of the book, we see Max as a selfish shallow man callously casting off his wife for a foolish romance with a younger woman. We don't read his perspective until nearly the end and it turns out he was exactly that but he also has redeeming qualities.
As for Celine, I disagree with some reviewers who describe her as weak. She fights for her husband when she realizes how much she loves him but she always stands up for herself.
Neither of these leads are perfect and Max clearly is much more at fault than Celine. However, if you don't shy away from the difficult subject matter and want a character-driven story about the growth of a marriage, I would recommend this book. I read it in one day and haven't been able to stop thinking about it.
Note that the book was published in the 90s.
Liked the story but not how it all came about. However, in the end it all came out right for all.
I loved this book. Shows a much more realistic picture of what can happen in real life. We aren't perfect and people in books shouldn't be either.
It's seems that if the author wants to use a cheating hero it is very hard to redeem him. This one didn't do to bad. The only thing that saved him were the facts that when he and Celine entered into the marriage it wasn't a love match. Max was in love with his fiancee who had died and figured he would never love again. Celine was okay with that. Suddenly Max believes he is in love with another woman and wants out of this seemingly happy yet loveless marriage. Celine realizes that she loves Max and doesn't wish to let him go but feels that she needs to. Once you can get past the fact that you believe Max is old enough to know what love really is, since he claimed to love his former fiancee, it's not really a bad book at all!
This is a 5 Star read for me. The H and h made me so mad at times but I loved all the angst.
This is a first for me to read about actual infidelity in a HP book. But the H did just that. He married for one reason she gave him that type of marriage. And the instead of talking with her he goes and has an affair. She ends up pregnant. This has low ratings. But I understood what the author was writing. He was a jerk to both victims. Yes his wife and mistress were victims in this story. I will re-read it again at another time.
*POSSIBLE SPOILER*
The reviews of this book, both positive and negative, had well stated viewpoints so I bought it with the idea that even though I've never liked a book that featured infidelity I might actually enjoy a realistic love story that included an understandable lapse in judgment, forgiveness, and reconciliation. That was definitely not the case with this book which seemed to support the idea that adultery is simply one of those bumps in the road that occurs in EVERY marriage and must be acknowledged and accepted to achieve HEA.
In the beginning I was sympathetic toward Max because the heroine treated him with such indifference and physical disinterest that I really could understand how he might be drawn to another woman that wanted to meet his physical and emotional needs. Then we were told that Max actually had the kind of marriage he wanted and had let Celine know before marrying her that he would never love her because his deceased fiancée, Juliet, was the one true love of his life and the only woman he would ever love intensely and with his whole being. He and Celine had been friends since childhood and friendship was all he could ever offer her. Hey, he even had to take Celine away for a weekend before they married just to see if he'd be able to make love to her so they obviously had very little chemistry. No wonder she was less than enthusiastic in the marriage, but I suppose it should have been a clue to her masochistic personality that she would ever marry the guy in the first place.
The story progressively went downhill after Max told Celine that he was having sex with a work colleague whom he loved with the same intensity he had loved Juliet and telling her once again that he would never feel that way about her, but of course he still wanted her friendship. I felt rather angry that Celine took his betrayal after more than a decade of marriage so passively instead of being infuriated and showing a little self respect. It also bothered me that Max had such little respect for Celine that he discussed her in such negative details with Kate, details that she later regurgitated to Celine, but he refused to talk about Kate whenever Celine asked questions. He did however seem to always be able to tell Celine how much he loved Kate and even something about his sex life, including the fact that Kate had given him her much valued virginity.
During the reconciliation with Celine, Max told Kate in front of his wife that it meant a great deal to him that she had given him her heart and herself and that he didn't take it lightly. He later talked with his wife in more specifics about his sex life with Kate, eventually acknowledging that he had loved her and that she would continue to be in his thoughts for some time. What kind of woman would have such low self worth that she would allow any man to treat her so hurtfully, and what kind of woman would try to assure her husband's mistress that he had been unfaithful to her with his wife only one time and that had been unplanned? I was truly surprised that when she and Max were deciding on a name for their baby girl that she didn't want to name her after both Max's dead fiancée and his ex-mistress because that would absolutely have been keeping in character for the so called heroine of this book.
