I love this book. I enlarge the charts and work from that. I love the variety of patterns. The directions for the individual stitches can be a bit confusing, but can be understood by working through them.
A good book on how to knit complex laces.
I am a beginning lace knitter. Ths book utterly demystifies lace knitting. Armed with the logic of lace construction, I quickly adapted to the rhythm of the pattern.
This book is phenomenal. The patterns are gorgeous and are charted out plainly and are big enough to be read without a magnifying glass.
I'm sure this will remain my go to lace reference (along with Barbara Walker) for many years to come.

This book is the ultimate lace knitting book. It is the exquisite work of a craftswoman from a bygone age analysed and interpreted by a scrupulous scholar, craftswoman and designer. Anyone who wants to work on their understanding of how different lace pattern stitches create different fabrics needs this book. There are clues in many books - and for many, Mary Thomas, Barbara Walker or a Weldon's Encyclopedia will be enough - but this is the one to go for if you are designing something. All this in a clear, precise and logical style that does reward your efforts to understand it eventually. My advice would be to avoid trying to find or understand the instructions for the 'hem' at the beginning of the sample, and do the pattern stitches, picking up your needles straight away.
Long awaited, this reprint has delighted me and the exalted few in England who have heard of it, let alone appreciate it. I can't wait to get back to my stitch and bitch group and boast about being the proud owner of something that has been virtually unobtainable for decades, and which is just as good as it promised.
I find this to be the best lace instruction book I have found so far. It goes into more than just patterns and knitting instructions but goes into more advanced instructions.
After the 92 patterns you will find really helpful chapters such as the following.
A look at types of stitches in lace panels which shows how they affect the design.
Balancing out increases and decreases in a pattern.
Arranging patterns.
Charting patterns from scratch, from a knitted item, from written pattern instructions.
All in all, I found this book very useful and have been referring to it often.
I'd inter-library loaned the Taunton Press edition of this text (ISBN 0-942391-52-7) while I waited for this edition to appear; as fate would have it they showed up within a week of each other.
The texts for both editions appear to be identical. The overall dimensions have, unfortunately, shrunk a bit (23 x 19 cm vs. the original's ~25 x 20 cm), but the price difference between a new copy of this edition and a used copy of the other (not to mention the bright, crisp pages 8-) makes the reprint worth it. The image scaling is minor, and I applaud Schoolhouse Press for making the text available so that the buyer isn't out $100+ and the author and publisher are rewarded for their efforts.
Reviews for the original (search for the ISBN above) cover the content; my review is simply to let potential buyers know that this edition is worth buying, is complete and is well done. I highly recommend this edition, and thank all publishers who respond to requests for reissues of texts that are out of print, yet in demand and go for outrageous 3rd party prices. Bravo!
There is a lot to be learned about lace here but it's quite complicated and the charts are small and often confusing due to the leaning lines, both left and right, that indicate bias in the fabric but look like ssk and k2 tog symbols. Studying them makes me dizzy! The patterns at the end were disappointing. After all the author's work, she comes up with some, frankly, ugly patterns, most particularly the shawl pattern. The sweater is attractive but more of a fisherman's than a lace sweater.... Advanced lace knitters may find this book interesting. Most of the patterns in the sampler are familiar and available in nicer format elsewhere. Most useful is the charting from a knitted piece info and, for those who aren't familiar with charting, the how to chart info. The sampler itself is interesting but not what I expected on the whole amd based on other reviews.

2. Has a section on how to read charts as a loom knitter some lace charts do not make sense to me. Though charts often make more sense than written instructions once you get the explanation here.
