From the first few pages the stakes in Midnight Sun are placed down. General Sefu, a dictator with money and military might rules a small African nation with an iron fist. Rebels attempt to overthrow him, and due to the richness of minerals in the land, foreign powers have decided to step in.Even though there is a large cast, the author makes sure to make many of the characters different. From a chapter where the character is introduced we get a taste of their past, current lifestyle, and how they act. It helps keep these characters distinct and separate, rather than confusing them. Pierre is a rebel who is, at the start of the story, detained in a military jail and tortured for any information he has. Lucinda is a kind but career-minded British woman, and her main goal is to take a picture that best exemplifies the downfall of Sefu. The chapters jump from the perspective of any of the characters we're introduced to, giving us an idea of what they're all up to at any given time.
I enjoyed the twining plotlines. Everyone has their own motivation and tries their best to steer events to the most desirable outcome. You can be on the edge of your seat hoping that one character or another succeeds, or at least gets out of a hairy situation alive. The writing was great, with few errors. It was vivid but got to the point quickly, and was vivid in its portrayal of the land as vicious and proud. I'd definitely recommend Midnight Sun to those who enjoy thrillers or any kind of fiction.

The sounds of battle in Africa are resounding and heart-rending. You cannot help be but feel a sense of sorrow at how the turn of events lead to the death of many in an African nation. This is akin to modern day fighting amongst villagers and rebel and the viscous cycle that's perpetuated over greed for natural minerals that are highly valuable on the open market. The author documented this story clearly and the storyline was organized. You could flow each heart-pondering event as it happen, you are almost thrust in a dramatic movie that has a well-constructed plot. Nothing is the same in each chapter the journey is constant and each chapter you will leaves you with a new, yet common perspective. Great work, I recommend that you get a copy of the riveting novel.
Written from many different characters point of view, this book is fast paced with an energetic feel to it. There's a lot going on inside this book, and I would compare it to Tom Clancy's writing. There is tyranny on it's way to collapsing, spies, and of course rebels fighting for their own causes.
There's Paul Ravel who is on his first trip to Africa. There is General Sefu the dictator. Lucinda is a photographer waiting for a picture of a lifetime. There's Pierre who is a rebel. Then there is John Abbot who is a spy. Last of all, there is Romy, a french model who inherited shares in a very important and profitable mine.
Each of the characters had depth and qualities that jumped off the page. There's nothing worse then a character you don't like just because he wasn't built up enough from the author. Every person you come to read, you lean to love and hate them. All for many different reasons.
I wished this book would have initially grabbed me into the story a bit more. It eventually became interesting to the point where I couldn't put the book down. The plot was very realistic and easy to follow, which made the book overall a pretty great read. Overall I would rate this a 5/5. Definitely recommend.
I picked up a copy of Monti's Midnight Sun because I happened across his blog just at the right time. He was offering a giveaway on for 3 days and so I grabbed a copy because I figured I had nothing to lose. I didn't really know what to expect of the book, all I knew was that it was about politics in Africa.
After reading two pages I was totally hooked.
Monti creates a highly complex and realistic story that is still easy and enjoyable to follow. The narrative is told from the point of view of a cast of characters, each of who is very different and some who serve as foils to each other. We follow a savvy American assassin with a hidden agenda, a French ex-runway model playing both sides from her luxurious African estate, an aging and disillusioned rebel fighter, the buffoonish yet coldly ambitious general who currently heads the government--these are just a few of the characters Monti draws with depth, emotion and intrigue.
As a reader, one of the most important things to me in a good book is the character development. I cannot stand flat characters. I was completely blown away by Monti's skill with characters in this book. Even the characters who could be labeled as the "bad guy" are shown with compassion and realism. We see everyone's motives, from the village fighters cutting their through the jungle, to the politicians in Washington pulling strings. And because we see all of these various, conflicting motivations, the reader comes out of the novel with an entirely new understanding of the explosive political situation in Africa.
This is one of those books that reads like a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum--very fast-paced, suspenseful page-turner style--but leaves you knowing so much more about the world when you finish it. Really such a good read. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
