It is a shame that P.N. Elrod has fallen by the wayside amongst the "new" vampire book craze. Especially those that center on YA. Reporter Jack Fleming is an incredibly human vampire. He died for love but she is gone and he is left to figure out his new "life." He is in trouble right from the start when he decides to find out who his murderer is. Because they keep trying to kill him. Fortunately for Jack, he is actually discovered for what he is by another investigator. He decides to take Jack's "case." Mainly because he interested in Jack's condition. Although the theme of the book is deeply involved in gangsters so it is a bit dated, I was so delighted with the characters I read with joy some of the situations the guys got themselves into. Well written and never outdated. Read it and you won't be sorry.

Bloodlist Vampire Files No 1 P N Elrod 9780441067954 Books Reviews

As usual, I'm late to the party. A friend recommended I read this (and the series as a whole) as its one of her favorites so I gave it a shot. I'm a fan of mysteries and vampires/urban fantasy so it seemed to be right up my alley.

Overall, I felt the book to be pretty solid. It didn't knock my socks off but I enjoyed it.

Jack Flemming wakes up on a beach in depression era Chicago. His memory of the past few days is hazy. Why's he on the beach? Why are his clothes all torn up? Most importantly, why can he see so good in the dark? Then it dawns on him--he's a vampire. The only way he could become a vampire is if he's dead. Someone's killed him and he's determined to find out who did it.

The premise is interesting and the writing is executed well. This is more a hard boiled detective novel than it is a vampire novel. There are plenty of vampiric elements in it, like how Jack uses his powers to investigate his death and how he deals with his newfound diet and sensitivity to light but it's not wall to wall vampirism all the time. That in itself is a pleasant change. This isn't a book about self loathing vampires (ala Ann Rice) or the freshly changed driven to the brink of madness. At its heart, it's a straight up mystery with a few paranormal elements.

The characters are well drawn, especially Jack's friend Escott, an eccentric actor turned private investigator. In a way, Escott reminds me of Special Agent Pendergast from the excellent Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (being their my favorites, I can give no higher praise for a character). He's proper a proper Brit, he's smart and he has a very dry wit. He's fun to read.

So, why didn't I rate the book higher? While it's explained why Jack knows some of the ins and outs of being a creature of the night (I won't put in any spoilers) he kind of falls into the roll too quickly. He seems to hit the ground running and that didn't seem very realistic (if that word can be used for something like urban fantasy) that he kind of picks himself up, dusts himself off and more or less says 'ok, I'm a vamp. Let's get 'er done'.

Some characters also seemed to be very accepting of Jack's nature. Being that vamps aren't exactly running rampant in the universe Elrod created for the novel and the series, it left me scratching my head that some of the characters just seemed to accept him for what he's become without so much as batting an eyelash.

The ending left me wanting too. It's wrapped up rather quickly then bam, the book ends.

The plot was pretty tight, although it didn't have many twists and turns. Which is fine. That's just an observation. It's pretty straight forward.

All in all, a good premise with fun writing and interesting characters. I enjoyed it despite some minor gripes and Elrod has made me interested in where the character goes and what kinds of misadventures he'll get into especially given that with a skill set like Flemming's, people will probably want to use him to their advantage.

Worth a look for fans of detectives and vamps alike.
Well, that was something I listened to. I can't say I loved it, not that it was actually bad. I was just rather bored with it, having expected more. The vampire aspect was totally pointless, Jack could have just been any prohibition-era gumshoe. (And I say that as someone who loves a good vampire novel.)

I did appreciate that he wasn't an alpha-asshole. He admitted to fear, cried and cared about his friends. It humanized him.

The book does suffer from the classic lack of female characters though. There is only one female character at all and she, of course, is the sexpot hooker-with-a heart. Cliched beyond mention!

Whitener did a fine job with the narration.
Very fun reading, great story and it is the first of the series. Hard to put the book down once you begin to read it.
I've been reading science/fiction/fantasy for more years that i can remember. don't know why I didn't read this series before and I LOVED it. It's a fun romp and the characters are wonderful. I bought the first three because they are not available in the NYC public library and i am very happy with my purchases. I will buy the next three when my pile of books to read gets a little smaller. Go ahead, enjoy the read!
Despite the vampires, this is not a horror novel; it's a detective novel based on the premise that vampires really exist. The vampire Fleming is a nice guy, a neophyte vampire who is just learning to use the advantages and cope with the disadvantages of his condition. My favorite character is Fleming's friend and partner in detection, Holmes, oops, I mean Escott. As all Sherlockians know, Escott is the alias Holmes used in the Charles Augustus Milverton blackmail case. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
I've read all of P.N. Elrod's vampire files and do enjoy them. They are more of the lighthearted side of vampire mystery books in my opinion. They are very enjoyable. What can I say I like the vampire reporter/detective, Jack Fleming. It is different then most and worth the read.
